Code of Ethics

At the heart of my work is a commitment to improving the welfare and quality of life of both animals and the people who care for them. Every recommendation I make is guided by compassion, scientific evidence, professional integrity, and respect for each animal as an individual.

Animal Welfare Comes First

The welfare of every animal is my highest priority. I believe behaviour is communication. Rather than simply suppressing unwanted behaviours, I work to understand why they are occurring by considering the animal's emotional state, health, environment, learning history, and natural behavioural needs.

My aim is always to improve welfare while helping owners achieve realistic, sustainable behaviour change.

Evidence-Based Practice

My work is based on current scientific research and accepted best practice within the fields of animal behaviour, learning theory, welfare science, and psychology. As our understanding of animal behaviour continues to develop, I am committed to continually updating my knowledge through ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.

Positive, Humane Methods

I only use ethical, reward-based methods that prioritise learning, trust, and welfare. I do not recommend or promote training methods or equipment designed to cause fear, pain, intimidation, or unnecessary stress. Behaviour modification plans are developed using the least intrusive approach appropriate for the individual animal.

Individualised Care

Every animal is unique. Behaviour is influenced by genetics, health, environment, previous experiences, emotional wellbeing, and individual temperament. For this reason, every assessment and treatment plan is tailored specifically to the individual rather than relying on one-size-fits-all training methods.

Veterinary Collaboration

Behaviour and health are closely linked. Many behavioural changes can be influenced or caused by pain, illness, neurological conditions, hormonal imbalances, or other underlying medical factors.

For this reason, behavioural consultations require veterinary involvement. Before implementing a behaviour modification programme, I ask that your veterinary surgeon confirms there are no known or suspected medical conditions that need investigating or treating first. Where appropriate, I may also recommend further veterinary assessment if an animal's behaviour suggests an underlying health concern.

Working collaboratively with your veterinary practice helps ensure that any medical causes are identified and addressed, allowing behaviour modification to be carried out safely, ethically, and with the greatest chance of long-term success.

I will refer clients to veterinary surgeons or other suitably qualified professionals when a case falls outside my area of expertise or when additional support is in the best interests of the animal.

I believe the best outcomes come from collaborative working.

Honesty and Integrity

I will always communicate honestly and transparently. This includes being realistic about likely outcomes, expected timescales, and any limitations of behaviour modification. I will never make guarantees regarding behavioural outcomes, as behaviour is influenced by many factors beyond any professional's control.

Respect for Clients

Every client will be treated with kindness, empathy, and without judgement. Living with behavioural challenges can be stressful and emotionally draining. My role is to support owners through evidence-based guidance, practical solutions, and compassionate understanding.

Confidentiality

Client information and case records are treated as confidential and stored securely in accordance with applicable data protection legislation. Information will only be shared with your permission or where required by law or where welfare concerns make disclosure necessary.

Professional Standards

I am committed to maintaining high professional standards by:

  • Acting honestly and ethically in all aspects of my work.

  • Maintaining appropriate professional insurance.

  • Keeping accurate records.

  • Engaging in regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

  • Working in accordance with relevant legislation and recognised professional standards.

Respect for Animals and People

I am committed to creating an environment where both animals and their owners feel safe, respected, and supported. I believe that successful behaviour change comes through understanding, patience, clear communication, and compassionate guidance, building lasting relationships based on trust rather than fear.
